The Louis Vuitton Monogram: 130 Years of a Living Emblem

As 2026 begins, Louis Vuitton celebrates the 130th anniversary of its Monogram canvas—an enduring symbol of luxury where heritage, craftsmanship, and the transmission of tradition converge. Created in 1896 by Georges Vuitton as a tribute to the House’s founder, the Monogram was conceived as both a safeguard against counterfeiting and a bold visual identity. Inspired by neo-Gothic ornamentation and Japonisme, the interlaced LV initials and stylized floral motifs quickly transcended their original function to become a universal and timeless emblem.

In January 2026, Louis Vuitton opens this anniversary year by honoring its most iconic Monogram canvas bags. The Speedy and Keepall, both introduced in 1930, embody freedom of movement and modern travel. The Noé, created in 1932 to carry five bottles of champagne, reflects joyful and functional creativity. The Alma, inspired by Parisian architecture, asserts structured elegance, while the Neverfull, launched in 2007, has become the quintessential modern companion.

From January 1, 2026, a global campaign will spotlight these five icons, emphasizing sustainability and legacy—values central to the House. Designed to last across generations, these bags develop a distinctive patina and are repaired and restored in Louis Vuitton workshops worldwide, where meticulous craftsmanship ensures longevity and emotional value.

Over the decades, the Monogram has united artisans, collectors, and cultural figures. It has been continuously reinterpreted by artistic directors—from Marc Jacobs to Nicolas Ghesquière for the Women’s collections, and from Virgil Abloh to Pharrell Williams for Men’s—while landmark collaborations with Takashi Murakami, Yayoi Kusama, and Richard Prince have reinforced its ability to evolve without betraying its essence.

To mark the anniversary, Louis Vuitton unveils the Monogram Anniversary Collection, composed of three limited-edition capsule bags. Monogram Origine revisits the 1896 design on a new linen-and-cotton jacquard in pastel tones inspired by archival client registers. VVN pays homage to the House’s natural cowhide leather, whose evolving patina tells a personal story. Time Trunk bridges past and present through a trompe-l'œil print evoking the textures and metallic details of historic trunks.
